Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis is a serious condition affecting newborns, especially preterm infants and those with low birth weight, representing one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to improve clinical outcomes; however, significant challenges remain due to the complexity of the disease and the limited sensitivity of available diagnostic tests. METHODOLOGY: A narrative literature review was conducted to discuss this specific topic. Digital platforms such as PubMed, BVS, and Google Scholar were consulted using relevant keywords. The search was limited to the period from 2014 to 2024, and articles were selected based on their relevance to the topic. RESULTS: The importance of early recognition of neonatal sepsis and the implementation of standardized management protocols is highlighted. Empirical antibiotic therapy with ampicillin and gentamicin is frequently used, but treatment adjustments are necessary based on culture results and antibiogram findings. Prevention of neonatal sepsis involves a multifaceted approach, including measures such as hand hygiene, care with invasive devices, and promotion of breastfeeding. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal sepsis remains a significant clinical challenge, and future research should focus on improving diagnostic accuracy, developing more effective prevention strategies, and evaluating new therapeutic options. By prioritizing these areas, it is believed that outcomes for newborns can be improved and sepsis-related morbidity and mortality reduced.
