BONE STIMULATION THROUGH SONIC VIBRATION

Since the mid-twentieth century, devices have emerged in dentistry that generate bidirectional linear sonic vibrations, known as piezoelectric systems. These devices were initially used for cavity preparation and dental wear, since the small low-frequency vibration of sonic devices results in less pain and less tissue damage (MESQUITA; LOBATO; MARTINS, 2006). However, in 2011, Jeremy Mao presented a device, the AcceleDent®, which applies the concept of using low-intensity sonic vibration force to accelerate tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. The appliance uses the application of pulsating forces to make teeth move faster through accelerated bone remodeling. This science has already been applied in other parts of the body, for example, to accelerate fracture repair and bone density in long bones.
