Abstract: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, collaborative communication approach aimed at promoting intrinsic motivation for behavioral change. In nursing consultations, particularly in the contexts of health promotion and chronic disease management, MI has increasingly been recognized as a relevant strategy to improve treatment adherence and self-care. Available evidence indicates that the application of MI in primary health care, heart failure, and mental health is associated with improvements in clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes, including metabolic control, blood pressure, self-care behaviors, and attitudes toward treatment. These effects have been reported in experimental studies and systematic reviews conducted across different care settings. The integration of MI into nursing clinical practice entails a reconfiguration of the professional role, shifting the focus from information delivery to the facilitation of informed decision-making and behavior change processes. However, its implementation faces organizational and educational barriers, namely time constraints, high workload, insufficient training, and the lack of structured supervision. It is concluded that MI constitutes an evidence-based communicational intervention with broad applicability in nursing consultations, requiring systematic incorporation into both undergraduate and continuing nursing education, as well as the establishment of institutional conditions that support its consistent use in clinical practice.
