BETWEEN CONTINUITY AND RENEWAL: TRENDS IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION IN BRAZIL
This article aims to examine the renewal of geography education in Brazil. To this end, it discusses the development of school geography in Brazil, the major renewal movements in the field throughout the 20th century, and the most recent curricular debates associated with the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) and high school reform. The research is bibliographic and exploratory in nature, based on the analysis of books, scholarly articles, and educational documents. The results indicate that the trajectory of Geography education has been marked by successive attempts to move beyond traditional practices and by the pursuit of a closer alignment between academic research, schools, and students’ realities. It is concluded that contemporary debates on curriculum and human development raise historical challenges for the discipline, especially regarding its autonomy, the development of geographical thinking, and its contribution to critical and civic education.
