Abstract: This study analyzes the historical, sociolinguistic, and cultural processes that shaped Brazilian Portuguese and contributed to its divergence from European Portuguese. Through bibliographic research and documentary analysis, it revisits the contact between Portuguese and Indigenous, African, and immigrant languages, highlights how plurilingualism and linguistic – especially during the colonial period and under the 1988 Federal Constitution – have alternately suppressed and fostered linguistic diversity in Brazil. It examines the dissociation between spoken and written modalities and evaluates the impact of these factors on the teaching of Brazilian Portuguese as a Foreign Language (BPFL). The results show that understanding the multicultural and plurilingual foundations of the language is essential to interpreting variation, real usage, and the linguistic identity of contemporary Brazilian society. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for pedagogical approaches that value linguistic diversity, cultural, recognition, and critical reflection on language.
