Abstract: Forced internal displacement (FID) has emerged as a growing phenomenon over the past three decades in Mexico, affecting individuals, families, communities, and municipalities. In addition to being a demographic issue, it represents a significant social, economic, political, and cultural problem for the country, directly tied to the lack of security that the State is obligated to provide to all its citizens. Research on the subject is scarce, which is why this article aims to approach the issue of FID in Mexico and the State of Mexico through a documentary investigation of this complex reality, using a Human Security analytical framework. The findings reveal an increase in internal displacement primarily caused by insecurity and violence in Mexico, which has negative effects on social development and human security for displaced individuals, as well as in both the areas of origin and destination. The State of Mexico registers the highest percentages of both displacement outflows and inflows due to violence. It is concluded that FID constitutes a humanitarian crisis that must be comprehensively addressed by the State through a public policy of displacement prevention, effectively targeting its root causes and addressing the material losses, physical insecurity, psychological, emotional, and traumatic impacts on individuals affected by violence, as well as the loss of their territorial, social, cultural, family, and work contexts.
