Abstract:
The solidification sequence influences the formation and growth of phases in a metal alloy. In Zn-(3-4)Al-(5-10)Cu alloys, the epsilon phase determines their mechanical properties. Previous research has analyzed the effect of Cu content and solidification kinetics on this phase. In this study, using thermal analysis and optical microscopy techniques, the effect on the microstructure of cooling rates at different positions with respect to the solidification front was observed by tempering the alloy from the formation temperature of the primary phase after applying different thermal cycles.
