Abstract: Air pollution is a problem affecting almost the entire population, resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and industrial and vehicular emissions, among others. However, little has been studied about the influence of contaminated water bodies on air quality, despite studies relating water movement in treatment plants with the resuspension of microorganisms. In this sense, the present work aims to determine if there is a relationship between the pollutants present in the air and those present in two rivers located in the state of Puebla, Mexico. To do so, the TO-13A sampling and extraction protocol for air samples and the 3535A method for water samples, both from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, were followed. The pollutant identification was performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The study revealed that there is a relationship between the pollutants present in the air and those present in the water. In addition, the transfer of pollutants from the Atoyac River, which runs through a city with a higher population density, to the Nexapa River was observed.
