Abstract: In this article, I will show two things: (1) how the Dominican Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and the Dominican Bartolomé de Las Casas (1484-1566) evaluate war in a general way, and (2) how Las Casas evaluates the four reasons that were proposed by his contemporary Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda as just causes to make war against the newly-discovered Indians in the Americas. I will basically use Thomas's Summa Theologiae, and Las Casas's Apologia, as the main references for this study. One of the benefits of this study will be to know better Las Casas's Thomism, which, according to the Dominican Carlos Josaphat, is a good reading key to Thomas's Summa.
