Socio-Environmental Cinema in Upper Secondary Education at the University of Guadalajara: A Case Study. Jamay Regional High School
This study is a descriptive exploratory research project conducted in 2024 with fifth-semester evening students at the Jamay Regional High School, part of the University of Guadalajara’s Upper Secondary Education System. The objective was to determine the impact of the university’s Socio-Environmental Film Program and to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the assessment tool provided by the program’s creators for students’ analysis of the documentary. It was found that students are sensitive to ecological issues through the program mentioned above, as well as willing to participate in campaigns for the care and protection of the environment—including both flora and fauna—starting with the immediate surroundings where they live. They are aware of the factors contributing to the environment being harmed and depleted, as well as the external interests at play that determine whether it is protected or devastated—to such an extent that environmentalists themselves are being murdered (see Appendix 1); It is not just the environment, animals, and wildlife that are being eroded; the entire earth is being eroded, and due to the interests of a few, it is left unprotected. Furthermore, from the student perspective—in the school setting, in the classroom, on the school campus, and in each student’s home—protective actions can be taken without harming anyone. It is concluded that the proposed instrument can be modified to yield better research results. Additionally, it is suggested that joint e y actions be carried out with other groups within the same school to put into practice what was learned from socio-environmental documentaries.
