CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE JIDDEN AGGREGATE FROM THE RIO DOCE AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE DURABILITY, STRENGTH AND CARBONATION OF THE CONCRETE

This work aims to evaluate the influence of the kid's aggregate extracted from Rio Doce in the possible appearance of concrete pathologies, since Rio has a history of contamination by substances from mining tailings. The probability of emergence of pathologies in the concrete can be high depending on the physical and chemical characteristics of the child used, such as corrosion of concrete and armor, putting at risk their durability. As Rio Doce is the largest granulometric source of civil construction in the municipality of Colatina, it becomes essential a better analysis of the characteristics of the concrete used in local constructions. For the analysis, three rivers were selected, in addition to theRio Doce, being the River Pancas, Santa Maria and Santa Joana in order to raise comparative and qualitative parameters with each other. Concrete samples were submitted to axial compression resistance tests, carbonation assay and corrosion potential test through electrochemical method, and it is possible to highlight that, among the rivers mentioned, theRio Doce presented low carbonation speed and results inferior in the rehearsal of corrosion potential of the armor. The results obtained indicate that there is no influence of the Creek River contamination history with the values presented in the rehearsals.

  • Abstract:

This work aims to evaluate the influence of the fine aggregate extracted
from Rio Doce on the possible appearance of concrete pathologies, since the river has
a history of contamination by substances with mining tailings. The probability of the
occurrence of pathologies in concrete may be high depending on the physical and
chemical characteristics of the fine aggregate used, such as corrosion of concrete and
reinforcement, putting its’ durability at risk. As Rio Doce is the largest granulometric
source of construction in the city of Colatina, a better analysis of the characteristics of
the concrete used in local constructions is essential. For the analysis, three rivers were
chosen: Pancas, Santa Maria and Santa Joana in addition to the Rio Doce, in order to
raise comparative and qualitative parameters among themselves. The concrete
samples were submitted for an axial compression resistance test, carbonation test and
corrosion potential test by electrochemical method, being possible to show that among
other rivers, the Rio Doce presented low values of carbonation velocity and the most
negative results in the corrosion potential test. Based on statistical analysis, it was
possible to verify that there is no influence of the Rio Doce contamination history with
the values found in the tests.
