SELF-TRAINING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL SKILLS IN NURSING STUDENTS

Introduction: Currently, self-directed learning is a key skill for learning in the field of nursing, being a tool that allows the development of professional skills in nursing students. Objective: To analyze current scientific evidence about the influence of self-directed learning on the development of professional competences of nursing students. Methodology: The research was carried out in the B-On search engine, using the descriptors “self-directed learning”, “nursing students”, “professional competences” and “learning methodology”. Inclusion criteria are based on articles published in academic and scientific journals, peer-reviewed, free access, published between 2017 and 2022 and with full text available in portuguese and english. Exclusion criteria are based on duplicate articles and those that didn’t meet the inclusion criteria. 8 articles were selected for full reading. Results: Most of the articles verified the importance of self-directed learning in the training of nursing students, its advantages and influence on the development of professional skills. Furthermore, other analyzed studies demonstrated the importance of a teacher in the development of this learning method. Conclusion: Self-directed learning is an essential tool in the development of professional skills in nursing students, which can be influenced by several modifiable and non-modifiable factors.
