Abstract: The article aims to contribute to studies on the social demands presented to social workers in mental health within the context of the Psychosocial Care Centers CAPS), as well as their professional practice in addressing these demands, which affect both the process of illness and the care of users. This is a literature review of articles published between 2020 and 2024 in journals from the fields of Social Workand Health, classified in the A1, A2, and B1 strata of Qualis Capes. The focus categories include: Mental Health; Social Work; Social Demands; CAPS. The results indicate that mental health in Brazil is shaped by historical, political, and social contradictions. The Psychiatric Reform represented a milestone in overcoming the asylum-based model by establishing care in freedom, the defense of human rights, and the centrality of community-based practices. In this context, the CAPS are configured as strategic devices of the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS), promoting reception, qualified listening, social rehabilitation, and citizenship, in opposition to exclusionary and segregationist practices. Social work, integrated into multidisciplinary teams, plays an essential role in mediating between mental health and social rights in addressing the multiple expressions of the social question that intersect with psychic suffering. There has been an increase in social demands during and after the pandemic, requiring the reinvention of professional practices and the strengthening of intersectoral articulation. However, underfunding and counter-reform trends weaken the psychosocial model and threaten the effectiveness of mental health policy. Understanding social demands and professional responses in this context is essential to strengthening interdisciplinarity, comprehensive care, and the principles of the Psychiatric Reform.
