CONTRIBUTION TO THE COFFEE ECONOMY OF THREE SELECTED MUNICIPALITIES IN THE LAXAXALPAN MIDDLE WATERSHED

In the municipalities of Ahuacatlán, Amixtlán, and Tlapacoya, located in the middle zone of the Laxaxalpan watershed in the state of Puebla, cherry coffee (Coffea arabica) plantations are economically important, as they provide monetary resources to forest dwellers around three years after planting the coffee tree and with a productive life of around 25 years. These plantations require shade for greater production, which is why they complement the natural forests of the basin. Their contribution to the region's economy is significant, since in 2023, the value generated by coffee plantations was 66.9 million pesos at market or current prices, which came from a relatively small planted area of 2,543 hectares, from which 8,335 tons of cherry coffee were obtained, and the municipality of Tlapacoya contributed half ( ) of the production volume of the municipalities considered in the study. With the exception of average yield per hectare and production, which were both negative, production value, average yield per hectare, and average rural price showed positive rates.
