ACUTE APPENDICITIS AND SURGICAL EMERGENCY: A RACE AGAINST TIME

Introduction: Presenting itself as visceral pain located in the lower right portion of the abdomen, in addition to other associated symptoms, acute appendicitis (AA) occurs as an inflammatory condition, in which there is obstruction of the lumen of the intestinal appendix by several factors, such as the accumulation of hard feces and the appearance of tumors. Therefore, it is known that this pathology is potentially fatal, as disruption of this intestinal portion tends to cause a generalized infection, making emergency care necessary to prevent the progression of this condition. Thus, the discussion in scientific circles about emergency surgical interventions has, in this pathology, great relevance in establishing the well-being of affected individuals; Objective: To evaluate the causes and consequences of the worsening of acute appendicitis, in addition to highlighting the notoriety of the work of health professionals in the emergency site. Methodology: This is a literary review with a descriptive approach that aimed to clarify the importance of immediate surgical intervention in cases of appendicitis and how this disease changes the social context in which the patient is inserted. Results and Discussion: After extensive documentary analysis, it became evident that the vast majority of studies establish a close relationship between the delay in appendectomy and the degree of impairment of appendix inflammation, increasing morbidity and mortality and hospital costs, as there is also an increase in length of stay; Final considerations: it is concluded, finally, that acute appendicitis presents itself as an important phenomenon in surgical emergencies, requiring concise action from health professionals, as they are responsible for reversing potentially fatal conditions and establishing patients' body homeostasis.
