Abstract: This research aims to analyze the operating variables of traffic light intersections to determine how the capacity and level of service affect their operational efficiency, as well as the impact on air quality in the city of Santa Marta. To meet this objective it was necessary to characterize the traffic light intersections of the city of Santa Marta, considering parameters of traffic volumes, capacity, saturation and service level, once operationally characterized the intersections are determined the critical elements in their operation, which generate delays and bottlenecks that culminate in traffic congestion and deficiencies in the mobility of the city. The analysis of the variables is based on a cause-effect model at each intersection, defining through which actions the operation can be improved and therefore achieve a fluid operation that minimizes vehicular combustion in these critical points of the city's mobility system. The results of this analysis show the operational deficiencies of the traffic light intersection system and the variables that are negatively affecting mobility and air quality in the city, the results obtained guide the actions at each intersection in order to contribute to improving mobility and air quality in the city.
