Abstract: This study aimed, through a literature review, to examine the main cognitive and behavioral changes in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), seeking to understand their relationship with the affected neurological structures. To this end, the PubMed, SciELO, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases were consulted, and 16 articles that met all defined criteria were selected from an initial total of 409 articles. The results indicate that AD affects prefrontal and temporal areas of the brain, leading to several cognitive and behavioral changes, such as reduced social interactions, decreased self-awareness and emotional response, altered eating habits, and repetitive behaviors, among others. In addition, a specific set of behavioral disorders associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) can affect individuals with AD, representing aggravating factors of the clinical condition and potential early markers of the neurodegenerative process. It is concluded that the cognitive and behavioral alterations of AD are linked to multiple brain regions, which makes their definition and mapping difficult, since the same cognitive function may involve different brain areas due to possible compensatory mechanisms. This difficulty of definition represents a diagnostic challenge. Therefore, the importance of producing scientific knowledge in this field is highlighted, in order to promote better diagnostic approaches, symptom management, more effective interventions, and improvement in the quality of life of patients and their families.
