ALTERAÇÕES COGNITIVAS E COMPORTAMENTAIS NA DOENÇA DE ALZHEIMER: UMA ANÁLISE NEUROLÓGICA

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo, por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, examinar as principais alterações cognitivas e comportamentais na Doença de Alzheimer (DA), buscando compreender sua relação com as estruturas neurológicas afetadas. Para isso, foram consultadas as bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), sendo selecionados 16 artigos que atenderam a todos os critérios definidos, dentre os 409 inicialmente encontrados. Os resultados indicam que a DA afeta áreas pré-frontais e temporais do cérebro, ocasionando diversas mudanças cognitivas e comportamentais, como diminuição nas interações sociais, queda na autoconsciência e na reação emocional, alterações nos hábitos alimentares, comportamentos repetitivos, entre outros. Além disso, um conjunto específico de distúrbios comportamentais, associados a sintomas neuropsiquiátricos (SNP), podem afetar pessoas com DA, representando agravantes do quadro clínico e potenciais marcadores precoces do processo de neurodegeneração. Conclui-se que as alterações cognitivas e comportamentais da DA estão vinculadas a múltiplas regiões cerebrais, o que dificulta sua definição e mapeamento, já que uma mesma função cognitiva pode envolver diferentes áreas cerebrais em virtude de possíveis mecanismos compensatórios. Essa dificuldade de definição representa um desafio diagnóstico. Dessa forma, destaca-se a importância da produção de conhecimento científico nessa área, a fim de favorecer melhores formas de diagnóstico, manejo dos sintomas, intervenções mais efetivas e melhora na qualidade de vida de pacientes e familiares.

  • Abstract: This study aimed, through a literature review, to examine the main cognitive and behavioral changes in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), seeking to understand their relationship with the affected neurological structures. To this end, the PubMed, SciELO, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases were consulted, and 16 articles that met all defined criteria were selected from an initial total of 409 articles. The results indicate that AD affects prefrontal and temporal areas of the brain, leading to several cognitive and behavioral changes, such as reduced social interactions, decreased self-awareness and emotional response, altered eating habits, and repetitive behaviors, among others. In addition, a specific set of behavioral disorders associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) can affect individuals with AD, representing aggravating factors of the clinical condition and potential early markers of the neurodegenerative process. It is concluded that the cognitive and behavioral alterations of AD are linked to multiple brain regions, which makes their definition and mapping difficult, since the same cognitive function may involve different brain areas due to possible compensatory mechanisms. This difficulty of definition represents a diagnostic challenge. Therefore, the importance of producing scientific knowledge in this field is highlighted, in order to promote better diagnostic approaches, symptom management, more effective interventions, and improvement in the quality of life of patients and their families.
