Abstract: Homelessness represents a severe form of social inequality and has become an increasingly pressing issue in Europe and Portugal. In 2023, more than one million people were estimated to be homeless in Europe, including around 400,000 children, figures that are likely underestimated due to less visible forms of housing exclusion. In Portugal, 13,128 individuals were recorded as homeless, predominantly men aged between 45 and 64, often facing unemployment, job insecurity, substance dependence, and lack of family support. Beyond material deprivation, this population experiences significant physical and mental health vulnerabilities, accelerated ageing, and higher mortality rates. Research also highlights profound spiritual suffering linked to loss of meaning in life, weakened social bonds, and prolonged social exclusion. In this context, spirituality, hope, and inner peace emerge as key protective and resilience factors. These dimensions play a crucial role in restoring dignity, enhancing well-being, and supporting personal reconstruction and social reintegration, emphasizing the need for holistic and evidence-based social and health interventions.
