Abstract: Health is a right for all and a duty of the state, and cannot be considered merely the absence of a disease, but also a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Since the new definitions of health by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, several models of health systems have been worked on to guarantee this right in a dignified manner to the population. This work addresses two health systems with different assistance models, the Unified Health System (SUS) being considered the largest universal health system in the world, and the United States health system, which despite being an economic power has a complex, fragmented and expensive health system. This is a literature review in the Google Scholar, Fiocruz, Must University Library and Scielo Brasil databases. The emergence of the SUS and the American private model was briefly addressed, as well as the specific characteristics of each, problems and positive aspects. It was concluded that both the SUS and the American private system are mixed, despite being based on different health models, they have many similar aspects, such as the connections made between the government and health insurance companies.
