Abstract: Elder abuse is an increasing concern in global public health, with greater prevalence among individuals with functional impairments, physical dependence, and conditions associated with cognitive decline and neuropsychiatric disorders. Although this topic is widely discussed, many of the direct consequences for the mental health of those involved remain not fully understood. The aim of this integrative review was to analyze the main forms of abuse, their psychological nature, and the direct impact on the victim’s mental health. The databases used were the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and the Virtual Health Library (BVS), using the descriptors “psychological,” “abuse,” and “elderly.” Studies were selected based on inclusion criteria (studies from the last 5 years, controlled clinical trials, and observational studies in English and Portuguese) and exclusion criteria (age groups under 60, studies that did not address the theme of “psychological abuse” or deviated from the proposed topic). A total of 27 scientific articles were analyzed. These studies revealed that the forms of violence with the greatest impact on the mental health of this age group are financial and psychological/emotional abuse (particularly abandonment and neglect), often stemming from codependent relationships with both family members and caregivers. It was concluded that there is a direct correlation between various forms of abuse—especially those involving psychological torture and abandonment—and the decline in mental well-being, as illustrated by the emergence of new neurodegenerative diseases or the worsening of pre-existing conditions, particularly dementia syndromes and depression.
