Abstract: This study highlights the importance of training healthcare professionals in the context of brain death protocols, with an emphasis on family approach, in order to increase the acceptance of organ donation. Conducted at the Hospital Universitário Regional dos Campos Gerais (HURCG), the research involved a literature review and the application of questionnaires to the multidisciplinary team – physicians, psychologists, and social workers – addressing the opening and closure of brain death protocols and organ donation. The results indicated that some professionals reported feeling insufficiently trained to deal with family communication, particularly when informing about brain death, revealing gaps in continuing education. Furthermore, the absence of specific training was shown to negatively affect the professionals’ confidence and, consequently, the families’ receptiveness to donation. On the other hand, professionals who had previously participated in training programs reported greater confidence and achieved higher acceptance rates among families. The study therefore demonstrates that continuous qualification of the multidisciplinary team is a determining factor for humanized care and for increasing family acceptance of organ donation. Thus, the implementation of permanent training programs at HURCG is proposed as a strategy to improve the family approach system.
