Abstract: The viola de buriti is a musical instrument crafted from the dried buriti palm, a wooden neck, and nylon thread strings. This instrument constitutes yet another (re)creation among the numerous violas found in Brazil, functioning as a bearer of cultural memory. In 2010, within the framework of a project on oral poetics carried out in the community of Mumbuca, the viola de buriti was revitalized and reintroduced into the group. Gradually, it was disseminated to urban audiences through regional and national events dedicated to the viola. The purpose of this study was to reflect on how collective memory is embedded in culture and in objects that are repeatedly produced and transmitted, such as the viola de buriti. This process unfolds through subjects/performers from different generations and diverse spatial and social contexts, who update and revitalize such objects through their particularities in practices that prevent them from being consigned to oblivion.
