Abstract: ABSTRACT Introduction: Sports injuries in moderate to high-performance athletes are common due to the dynamics of the sport. They can occur for a variety of reasons, such as muscle overload, poor preparation during training, and direct impacts during matches. Therefore, it is essential to identify muscle imbalances caused by sports practice. Objective: Analyse which traumatic mechanisms cause muscle injuries in football players, as well as to describe the most prevalent injuries and their degree of bodily extension. Methodology: Systematic and descriptive literature review, with data collection based on the 2020 Prisma Statement model, using the PubMed, SciELO, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs platforms. We selected studies involving professional and amateur athletes, with a history of muscle and ligament injuries in the lower limbs, male, aged 18 to 50 years. Results: The most evident injuries in football affecting the lower limbs mainly include muscle strains, sprains, and ligament injuries. The muscles most affected are the hamstrings, quadriceps, and adductors, due to explosive actions. In the knee, the menisci and ligaments stand out, mainly the collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments. Conclusion: Although the evidence highlights muscle injuries as prevalent, there is a certain increase in the severity of injuries. Keywords: Soccer, Epidemiology, Injury.
