The logic of violence in the prisoner rebellion at the Alcaçuz Penitentiary/RN

• Abstract:

  The objective of this paper is to analyze the rebellion of prisoners that occurred in January 2017 in the State Penitentiary Dr. Francisco Nogueira Fernandes (Alcaçuz) in Rio Grande do Norte/ Brazil. The rebellion was characterized by the confrontation between rival criminal factions whose result was the executions of inmates and acts of extreme violence. The main form of execution used by the prisoners was beheading / decapitation with public display of decapitated bodies. This case is considered paradigmatic for the discussion of the situation of violence in the Brazilian prison system and for the understanding of the principles of violent sociability that govern criminal organizations in prisons.
