THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FIRST ACADEMIC LEAGUE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY OF CURITIBA IN MEDICAL DEGREE AND IN THE SOCIAL SCOPE

HISTORY AND ORGANIZATION OF THE LEAGUE: The Curitiba Academic League of Ophthalmology (LIOF) was created in 2004. It was a pioneer in addressing ophthalmological diseases in a complementary way. LIOF is associated with the Brazilian Association of Ophthalmology Academic Leagues. Currently, it is made up of 88 connecting members from Curitiba, 30 connecting members from other states, 6 directors and 2 advisors. Since its foundation, it has had clinical and surgical internships at ``Hospital de Olhos do Paraná`` (HOPr), which has been a reference in ophthalmology in Brazil for over 45 years. INTRODUCTION: LIOF allows the integration of theoretical learning into complementary practical activities, in addition to promoting a deeper understanding of ophthalmology topics that are rarely covered in college. Academic internships, such as those provided at HOPr, are essential to complement the insufficient teaching of ophthalmology at undergraduate level. It is of great importance, including for future general practitioners, to know how to treat patients with ophthalmological complaints, which are common in basic health units and emergency care. Added to this is the fact that common comorbidities in the population have serious ophthalmological repercussions. Systemic Arterial Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus, for example, directly affect vision and can lead to retinopathies, glaucoma and optic neuropathy. OBJECTIVES: Describe the benefits acquired through LIOF activities within the scope of medical and social graduation. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive analysis of the experience of LIOF directors and members regarding the theoretical and practical activities promoted by the academic league. RESULTS: LIOF's theoretical and practical activities contribute to promoting a solid foundation in ophthalmology knowledge. Over its 19 years of tradition, LIOF values the bond with an institution and teachers of excellence. The theoretical activities feature speakers who cover everything from basic topics such as anatomy and ophthalmological semiology to more in-depth topics such as refractive errors, retinal pathologies and surgeries. The virtual lectures have a national reach and include the participation of academics from more than 7 states. The HOPr structure allows 4 students to have practical experience in the SUS outpatient clinic and 2 more callers in the surgical center on a daily basis. As a result, 120 places for practical activities are offered per month. Students have the freedom to carry out care and examinations in the outpatient clinic. Furthermore, the social issue is greatly promoted by the league, promoting the humanitarian development of its members, through the participation of collective efforts to assist the population. An average of 300 patients are served per activity, including social awareness programs (De Olho nos Olhinhos and Glaucoma do Bem) and the Pequenos Olhares Campaign that supports needy communities.
CONCLUSION: Based on the above, it is possible conclude that LIOF is of great importance in medical and social training. The league complements ophthalmological education and allows future doctors to know how to manage ophthalmological complaints in basic health units and emergency rooms. Furthermore, it has great social relevance with joint efforts that serve the needy population and promote social awareness campaigns.
