Abstract: The integration of teaching, research, and outreach constitutes an important axis in academic training at higher education institutions, enabling the articulation between theoretical knowledge and social practice, and is a basic premise of the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC). Located in a region with marked social inequalities and weaknesses in the provision of essential services, such as basic sanitation, a significant challenge for UESC is to contribute to the mitigation of endemic diseases, including intestinal and systemic parasitoses, through research and outreach projects with the regional community. In this context, the outreach activities developed within the Parasitology Laboratory (LAPAR) at UESC have become important strategies for promoting health and producing scientific knowledge. Over time, these activities have been developed by teams composed of professors, students, scholarship holders, and volunteers, in partnership with the communities, stimulating student leadership and the development of technical, scientific, and social skills. The work dynamic prioritized the integrated participation of all team members in each stage of the project, encompassing the creation of educational materials with a playful and educational approach, conducting socio-environmental diagnoses, surveying the prevalence of parasitic diseases, raising community awareness, implementing health interventions, and promoting critical social awareness. Although this is the guiding principle of the project, the methodological strategy usually varies depending on the profile of the participating public and the identified needs. Beyond the actions carried out outside the academic environment, participation in events such as seminars and institutional meetings deserves special mention, as they contributed significantly to scientific dissemination, fostering discussion and outlining strategies for future applications, with a view to better integration with society. To date, the results of this articulation with the communities have shown that outreach contributes to a critical, humanized, and socially committed education, as well as positively impacting communities through health promotion and the prevention of diseases related to inadequate basic sanitation. This reinforces the importance of the inseparable link between teaching, research, and outreach in student education and in the social role of the public university.
