Abstract: The present study analyzes economic thought in 19th-century Brazil from a documentary perspective, based on the examination of periodicals published between 1812 and 1900. Moving away from exclusively quantitative approaches, the work investigates economics as a qualitative and ethical science, situated as a structuring element of the nation. Through the analysis of primary sources, the article maps the tension between economic reason — an advocate for individual freedom and technique — and the deadlocks arising from the interventionist models of the era. Engaging with authors such as Ludwig von Mises, Joseph Salerno, and Amartya Sen, the investigation demonstrates how the 19th-century debate anticipated dilemmas regarding the viability of progress dissociated from freedom. It is concluded that the historical rescue of these sources is indispensable for economic historiography, presenting economics not as an abstract geometric theorem, but as the exercise of intelligence applied to national prosperity.
