• Abstract: Introduction: The strong influence of Florence Nightingale as a precursor of Modern Nursing and Ana Justina Nery as a national protagonist of Nursing expanded the profession's scenario in the broad areas of health. In this context, the professional class is occupying its space with advances and transformations, where it composes the scope of action in several municipalities of the national sphere, among them the city of Imperatriz in Maranhão. Objective: The study aims to describe the historical process of nursing in the city of Imperatriz- Ma. Method: This is a historical study with a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach, carried out with the pioneers of nursing in the municipality. Information was obtained through semi-structured interviews, whose speeches were transcribed and synthesized by Bardin's content analysis, over a period of four months. Results and discussions: Of the six nurses interviewed in this study, they were aged between 40 and 65 years and had at least 40 years of experience in the municipality. All have a master's or doctoral degree, having carried out their professional activities in hospital care, primary health care and teaching. From the reports, it was recognized that nursing contributed to great advances in public and private health in the municipality and, at the same time, played a leading role in the history of the profession Considerations: It is evident that there is a need to expand knowledge about the appreciation of the profession in contributing to health policies, a vital issue for understanding its present.
